JULY KEY POINTS


VALUE OF DWELLING COMMITMENTS

July 2010 compared with June 2010:
  • The trend estimate for the total value of dwelling finance commitments excluding alterations and additions was flat (0.0%). Investment housing commitments fell 0.5%, while owner occupied housing commitments rose 0.3%.
  • In seasonally adjusted terms, the total value of dwelling finance commitments excluding alterations and additions rose 0.7%.


NUMBER OF DWELLING COMMITMENTS

July 2010 compared with June 2010:
  • In trend terms, the number of commitments for owner occupied housing finance was flat (0.0%).
  • In trend terms, the number of commitments for the construction of dwellings fell 3.0%, while the number of commitments for the purchase of new dwellings rose 1.7% and the number of commitments for the purchase of established dwellings rose 0.2%.
  • In original terms, the number of first home buyer commitments as a percentage of total owner occupied housing finance commitments rose from 16.0% in June 2010 to 16.1% in July 2010.

REVISIONS

In this issue revisions have been made to the original series as a result of improved reporting of survey and administrative data. These revisions impact on:
  • Owner occupied and investment housing for June 2010; and
  • Housing loan outstandings to households for the period December 2008 to June 2010, apart from September and October 2009.

Seasonally adjusted and trend series have been revised as a result of revisions to the original series, the incorporation of estimates for the latest month and the revision of seasonal factors due to the concurrent seasonal adjustment methodology.
