ABOUT THIS RELEASE

The ABS is undertaking an investigation into the use of Australian Taxation Office (ATO) business income tax data to improve the range and quality of economic statistics. The main focus of this work is to produce more detailed information for some of the series that make up the Australian National Accounts.This investigation has now progressed to a stage where the ABS has produced experimental estimates of business economic activity using the ATO business income tax data to supplement data collected from an existing ABS survey. This paper presents details of the investigations to date, preliminary findings and the experimental estimates for selected industries for 1994-95 and 1995-96.
