At the All groups level, the CPI rose in all capital cities during the December quarter 2013.

The recreation and culture group was the most significant positive contributor to the All groups quarterly movement, recording rises in all eight capital cities. The largest movement was recorded in Darwin (+3.5%) mainly due to rises in domestic holiday travel and accommodation.

The food and non-alcoholic beverages group was the second most significant positive contributor to the All groups quarterly movement, recording rises in all capital cities. The most significant contributor was Hobart (+2.5%) mainly due to rises in fruit and vegetables.

The alcohol and tobacco group was also a positive contributor to the All groups quarterly movement, recording rises in all eight capital cities. The largest movement was recorded in Hobart (+1.9%) mainly due to rises in tobacco.

The most significant negative contributor to the All groups quarterly movement was the clothing and footwear group, recording falls in all capital cities with the exception of Hobart and Canberra. The largest movements were recorded in Sydney (-1.7%) mainly due to falls in footwear for infants and children, and Perth (-1.6%) mainly due to falls in accessories.

Over the twelve months to the December quarter 2013, the All groups CPI rose in all capital cities with the largest positive movement recorded in Darwin (+4.4%) mainly due to rises in housing and recreation and culture groups. Canberra (+2.3%) and Adelaide (+2.3%) recorded the smallest rises over the 12 months to the December quarter 2013.
