IT SECURITY INCIDENTS OR BREACHES

Businesses that used a computer were asked whether any IT security incidents or breaches (that were not intercepted by the business' IT security measures) occurred in 2007-08.

Overall, 15% of businesses which used a computer reported an IT security incident or breach during the year ended 30 June 2008. Business experiencing an IT security incident or breach ranged from 13% of businesses with 0-4 persons employed, to 21% of those with 200 or more persons.

Businesses in Professional, scientific and technical services were the most likely to have experienced an IT security incident (21%), followed by those in Information media and telecommunications and Rental, hiring and real estate services (both 20%). The industries with the lowest proportion of businesses that experienced an IT security incident were Construction, Transport, postal and warehousing, Health care and social assistance and Arts and recreation services (all 12%).
