The Child Care Arrangements Survey was conducted throughout Australia in November 1984, as part of the Monthly Population Survey, to obtain information on child care arrangements made by persons responsible for an estimated 2, 897,000 children under twelve years of age. The survey collected details on the social and economic characteristics of family units (including marital status, labour force details, income); demographics of children (including age, sex, year of arrival); patterns of usage of child care for each child in the survey (including hours, days and type of care); cost and main reason for using formal and informal child care; the level of met, partially met or unmet demand for child care services; and the amount of care by the spouse.
