KEY MEASURES FOR ARCHIVES, GALLERIES, LIBRARIES AND MUSEUMS

The Information Paper:Towards Comparable Statistics for Cultural Heritage Organisations, 2008 (cat. no. 4916.0) was released on the ABS website in November 2008. The paper identified 16 Key Industry Measures for cultural heritage organisations and outlined detailed guidelines on how to collect and report on them. It also provided users of the data with detailed information such as definitions and collection guidelines to consider when analysing the data. The aim of the paper was to encourage more consistent and comparable reporting between cultural heritage organisations regardless of whether they represent a museum, art gallery, library or archive. NCCRS will shortly commence a review of this paper and the practical implementation of the guidelines within the collections sector. NCCRS expects to send out questionnaires to the 40 major cultural organisations who were involved in initial consultations, seeking feedback about all aspects of the guidelines. The outcome of the review will be reported to the Cultural Ministers Statistics Working Group to determine the next steps towards achieving comparable statistics across cultural heritage organisations.
