Welcome to the latest newsletter from the National Migrant Statistics Unit (NMSU).

Since the last newsletter, a new edition of the Perspectives on Migrants (cat. no. 3416.0) series has been released by the NMSU. This edition contains three descriptive articles with a common theme – the population characteristics of overseas-born migrants by selected regions of birth. We have already commenced working on edition 3 of this successful series.

The NMSU is also in the process of finalising data for the release of edition 2 of the popular Migrant Data Matrices (cat. no 3415.0). This release will contain additional ABS data and will continue the NMSU's aim to simplify access to migrant related ABS data. User feedback on edition 1 will be incorporated into edition 2 and I encourage you to continue to provide comments on this and other NMSU releases via the ABS website or the contacts listed in this newsletter.

Labour Force Status and Other Characteristics of Recent Migrants, Australia, Nov 2007 (cat. no. 6250.0) was released in May 2008 providing a range of current data for recent migrants including information by visa categories.

Representatives from the NMSU have now visited most states and the territories to highlight to clients the range of migrant products that have been released. In addition, the subsequent discussions with stakeholders have helped to better identify current and emerging policy issues relating to migrants and ethnicity as well as the statistical needs in terms of these issues.

The NMSU will continue to develop relationships with policy agencies, data users and data custodians in an effort to create new products and reports that provide and support relevant analysis in this field. If you have an interest in this area, we would be pleased to hear from you (see Newsletter contact details).
