SHORT-TERM VISITOR ARRIVALS

In trend terms, short-term visitor arrivals to Australia during January 2018 (753,700 movements) remained steady at 0.0% when compared with December 2017 (753,500 movements). Currently, short-term visitor arrivals are 5.7% higher than in January 2017.

The following table presents the top ten source countries (based on original estimates) for short-term visitor arrivals during January 2018. When trend estimates for short-term visitor arrivals for January 2017 and January 2018 were compared, the highest percentage increases were recorded for India (23.2%), followed by Canada (12.9%), and the United States (11.9%).

SHORT-TERM RESIDENT RETURNS

In trend terms, short-term resident returns to Australia during January 2018 (888,100 movements) increased 0.1% when compared with December 2017 (887,100 movements). Currently, short-term resident returns are 2.6% higher than in January 2017.

The following table presents the top ten destination countries (based on original estimates) for short-term resident returns in January 2018. When trend estimates for short-term resident returns for January 2017 and January 2018 were compared, the highest percentage increases were recorded for Vietnam (28.0%), followed by Japan (16.2%), and India (13.8%).The highest percentage decreases were recorded for Indonesia (-10.8%), the United States (-2.0%) and New Zealand (-1.0%).
