Census on the Net
An innovative new way of accessing information from the 1996 Census is now available on this ABS web site.
Two of the summary tables from the 1996 Census Basic Community Profile, are available free of charge, for areas ranging from Statistical Local Areas (SLAs) to all of Australia. The two tables are Selected Characteristics for all persons and Selected Medians. Data for local areas can be easily located by either clicking on the map or using the text search facility.
By using the map facility, you can zoom in to different locations of interest. When you have determined your area of interest, data are displayed for that location.
Alternatively the text search facility will provide data directly for a specified area.
There's also on-line help at the bottom of each screen to assist you to better understand census geography and data.
While you're looking at the ABS home page take the time to view the full summary of findings and selected tables from our publications entitled Selected Social and Housing Characteristics for SLAs (cat. no. 2015) and Characteristics for Urban Centres and Localities (cat. no. 2016).
