DEMOGRAPHIC STATISTICS

Population by Age and Sex, Australian States and Territories, Census Edition - Final (cat. no. 3201.0) was released in March 2003. This issue contains final estimates of the resident population of Australian states and territories as at 30 June from 1997 to 2001, and preliminary estimates as at 30 June 2002. Australian Demographic Statistics, 2001 Census Edition - Final, September Quarter 2002 (cat. no. 3101.0) was released in March 2003. It contains final estimates of the resident populations (ERP) of Australia and the states/territories based on the results of the 2001 Census of Population and Housing from September 1996 to June 2001, revised data from September 2001 to June 2002 and preliminary data for September 2002. It also contains data on the components of population growth (natural increase, net overseas and net interstate migration) for the respective periods, and a special article on how Australia calculates the ERP. Population Projections, Australia (cat. no. 3222.0) is due for release in August 2003. It contains alternative projections (based on different assumptions as to future levels of fertility, mortality and migration) of the resident population of Australia, the states/territories, capital cities and balance of states from 2002 to 2101.
