CensusAtSchool Professional Development

“I found the session highly motivating with many possibilities to use CensusAtSchool with my students. Extremely worthwhile.”

"One of the most useful PD sessions I've been to in a long time"
CensusAtSchool PD Session
"Will encourage other staff at school to use this resource"

These are just some of the comments from teachers across Australia about the CensusAtSchool Professional Development sessions. These two hour sessions aim to introduce the CensusAtSchool resource and show what can be done with CensusAtSchool data through demonstrations of classroom activities using MS Excel.

CensusAtSchool PD SessionThe sessions provide an opportunity to share and discuss ideas and strategies with other teachers. Many teachers complete the session feeling their knowledge of Excel has been enhanced and that they are more confident and inspired to use CensusAtSchool data with their students. An outline of the PD sessions is available under Professional Development on the CensusAtSchool web site via the Professional Development Materials link. The outline will be valuable to teachers who may wish to assist colleagues to discover how they also can use the data in Excel.

CensusAtSchool PD SessionThe CD ROM 'Using CensusAtSchool Data' has been developed and will be available on request within the next month. This CD guides teachers through four statistical problems using the CensusAtSchool data. Please email the CensusAtSchool team with your postal address if you would like a copy.

To further support teachers, the CensusAtSchool team has produced a series of introductory activities using Excel, working through many of the skills covered in the Professional Development sessions. These can be found within the Teacher Area of the CensusAtSchool web site. To access the activities, select your state/teritory and then choose the Introductory Microsoft Excel Activities link.

CensusAtSchool Community

Since the release of the data on 11 July, teachers have been contacting the CensusAtSchool Team sharing their ideas on how they have used CensusAtSchool data in their classroom. These ideas and other feedback from teachers is being shared via the CensusAtSchool online community pages.

The CensusAtSchool online community is designed for teachers to share their ideas, experiences and advice with other teachers throughout the country. We believe the full potential of CensusAtSchool will be realised by teachers applying the resources in the classroom and then sharing it with others.

The community pages can be found by visiting the Using CensusAtSchool section located in the Teacher Area. To make a submission to the CensusAtSchool community and have it published in this area please send it to the CensusAtSchool team at censusatschool@abs.gov.au.

What Does the Data Look Like?

There are three ways you can get the data; designed to support you and the technological environment in your school.

Random sampler
Students can get their own sample. Each sample will be unique so, it will be their data.
Visit the Random Sample page

Prepared samples
If the Internet is problematic in your school these will help. There are also simplified samples that have tables constructed and graphs drawn. Great for younger students.

Information Tables
These information and data tables mean you can use the data where your students do not have access to a computer.

Census Forms on the Way
Census CollectorCensus Collectors are out and about delivering Census forms to every corner of the country in readiness for Census night on Tuesday 8 August.

Census form delivery will continue right up until the day before the Census and people shouldn't worry if they don't receive a form in the next week or so.

Generally Collectors work between 8.30am to 8.30pm on weekdays and from 9am on weekends.

People should be aware that all Australian Bureau of Statistics Census Collectors will be wearing an official identification badge (including photograph) and carrying a large, yellow census bag. Census collectors are not required to enter household premises in the course of their duties.

Anyone who is not wearing their identification badge or insists on entering the household is not a Census Collector.

Census Collectors have been trained to assist and advise householders on filling in Census forms. A booklet entitled "How to complete your Census form" accompanies all Census forms. The booklet includes answers to the most commonly asked questions and also explains the use of the information collected.

For this Census, people have the option of filling their form out online - this is called the eCensus. Instructions for taking this option are included in the booklet.

Further information, including information in many community languages, is available on www.abs.gov.au/census.
