FEBRUARY KEY POINTS


TOTAL NEW MOTOR VEHICLE SALES
  • Trend estimates: The February 2013 trend estimate (96 233) has decreased by 0.3% when compared with January 2013.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: The February 2013 seasonally adjusted estimate (95 708) decreased by 41 units when compared with January 2013.


SALES BY TYPE OF VEHICLE
  • Trend estimates: When comparing national trend estimates for February 2013 with January 2013, sales of Sports utility vehicles and Other vehicles increased by 0.9% and 1.1% respectively. Over the same period, Passenger vehicle sales decreased by 1.5%.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: When comparing seasonally adjusted estimates for February 2013 with January 2013, sales of Sports utility vehicles and Other vehicles increased by 0.3% and 1.7% respectively. Over the same period, Passenger vehicle sales decreased by 1.0%.


SALES BY STATE
  • Trend estimates: Five of the eight states and territories experienced a decrease for new motor vehicle sales when comparing February 2013 with January 2013. The Northern Territory recorded the largest percentage decrease (0.9%), followed by the New South Wales (0.5%) and Queensland (0.4%). Over the same period, South Australia increased by 0.6% and both Western Australia and Tasmania by 0.1%.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: Five of the eight states and territories experienced an increase in new motor vehicle sales when comparing February 2013 with January 2013. The Northern Territory recorded the largest percentage increase (10.0%), followed by Western Australia (1.7%). Over the same period, Tasmania and South Australia decreased by 6.7% and 5.3% respectively.

This issue presents details for the Sales of New Motor Vehicles for February 2013.


DATA NOTES

The flooding which occurred in Thailand in from June 2011 may have had an impact on new vehicle sales in Australia due to associated delays in delivery of Thai manufactured vehicles and vehicle parts. The impacts from the flooding is no longer affecting the supply of new motor vehicles to Australia from Thailand.
