Ag Mag | the agriculture newsletter

WELCOME
As the Director of the Agriculture National Statistics Centre (NSC) I would like to welcome you, on behalf of the whole ABS Agriculture Program, to the third edition of Ag Mag.

This edition of Ag Mag highlights the success of the Mesh Block coding project which saw 2005-06 Agricultural Census data for 150,000 agricultural businesses allocated to a geographic region called a mesh block. The great benefits of this exercise can be seen in the new 'small area' output products now available...most recently Value of Agricultural Commodity Production data and water use data by a range of geographies.

We also look briefly at the new Agricultural Resource Management Survey 2007-08. This collection combines questions relating to agricultural commodity production and resource management and use which has reduced the overall reporting burden on respondents who in the past may have received two separate questionnaires.

As well, we outline the current review of the content of future agricultural censuses and surveys, and look at the internal structural changes made to the agriculture program.

Finally, I would like to thank Jerralyn Wright who, as Acting Director, safely steered the ship between the retirement of Allan Nicholls and my arrival.

If you have queries with any material in this newsletter, wish to provide any feedback on these collections or raise any issues regarding agricultural statistics in general, please contact me.
