This publication is being reissued in order to replace 1976 Census data with 1981 data in the article: 'How many children have women in Australia had?' The 1976 Census only asked women who had ever been married whether they had given birth, while all women were asked this question from 1981 onwards, making comparisons between the 1976 data and data from subsequent censuses misleading. All of the other numbers in this article (and in the publication) are correct. This page last updated 24 March 2009
