NOTES

Two additional data cubes containing statistics for the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population (data cube 2) and Population Distribution (data cube 3) were added to this issue on 23 September 2008. The estimates for the latest reference periods contained in these data cubes were released in other ABS products on 19 August 2008.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCT

Australian Historical Population Statistics contains a wide range of demographic data in spreadsheet format (Microsoft Excel), going back, where possible, to the beginning of European settlement (1788) of Australia.

The 2008 update of Australian Historical Population Statistics will be released in two stages due to the availablity of new data relevant to this publication shortly after its initial release. The first release, on 5 August 2008, includes statistics on population size and growth, population age-sex structure, births, deaths, migration, country of birth, overseas arrivals and depatures, marriages, divorces and population by marital status. The second release, scheduled for September 2008, will include statistics on population distribution and the Indigenous population.

ABS sees this as an evolving product, with new data sets being added in response to the need and the availability of data in electronic form. Comments on this product would be appreciated. If you wish to make comments or discuss any issues regarding this product, please contact Ellouise Hyams by telephone on (02) 6252 6820 or send an email to demography@abs.gov.au.

UPDATES

Australian Historical Population Statistics has been restructured during the 2008 update and is now based on a different numbering system to that of past releases of this product. Whereas tables were previously presented as a single continuous list, they are now contained within 13 data cubes, each of which contains multiple worksheets on a particular demographic topic.

The 2008 update of Australian Historical Population Statistics contains data cubes on the following topics:

      1. Population size and growth
      2. Indigenous population
      3. Population distribution
      4. Population age-sex structure
      5. Births
      6. Deaths
      7. Life tables
      8. Migration
      9. Country of birth
      10. Overseas arrivals and departures
      11. Marriages
      12. Divorces
      13. Marital status

See Data Cubes (I-Note) for a full listing of tables available in the 2008 update.
