Internet commerce income

All businesses that reported receiving orders via the internet were asked to indicate what proportion of their income from the sales of goods or services could be attributed to those orders (i.e. internet income). During 2011-12, 28% of all businesses received orders via the internet and the estimated value of internet income resulting from those orders was $237 billion.

Consistent with previous releases of these data, the dollar value of internet income increased with each successive employment size range. For example, businesses with 200 or more persons employed reported more than half of the total estimate of internet income, at $129 billion, compared with businesses with 0-4 persons employed that reported 7% of the total estimate of internet income ($16 billion).

Of those businesses that received orders via the internet, one in three reported that internet income was less than 1% of their total goods or services income. Businesses with 0-4 persons employed were the most likely to report that internet income was more than 50% of their total goods and services income (26%).

Further data relating to internet income resulting from orders received via the internet can be accessed via the Downloads tab.
