The Survey of Voluntary Work provides information on the participation of persons involved in unpaid voluntary work through an organisation or group. Information includes the type of organisation with which the voluntary work is associated, type of activities carried out, time spent volunteering, the characteristics of the volunteer, the perceived benefits of volunteering and the reason for volunteering. Education related data items in the survey include educational attainment and field of study. The survey also allows for the identification of volunteers in the field of education, training and youth development.

Persons aged 18 years and over in all private Australian households are included in the 2000 survey. Excluded from the survey are households in remote and sparsely settled parts of Australia. The exclusion of persons in these households has an insignificant effect on estimates produced for individual sStates and tTerritories, with the exception of the Northern Territory.

The 1995 survey covered persons of working age (15 years and over) who are civilians, usually resident in Australia but excluded from the survey are members of the permanent defence forces, certain diplomatic personnel of overseas governments, overseas residents in Australia, and members of non-Australian defence forces (and their dependants) stationed in Australia.
