The value of operating profit before tax for book publishers increased from $86.9m in 2002-03 to $152.1m in 2003-04; an increase of 75%. This led to an increase in profit margin from 6% to 10%.

Comparative financial data for the period 2001-02 to 2003-04 is available from the Book Retailers Survey (ABS 2005b). Bookshops recorded growth in terms of sales over this period, although the operating profit before tax declined, with the profit margin declining from 4% in 2001-02 to 1% in 2003-04.

Results published in (ABS, 2011d) Cultural Funding by Government, 2009-10 (cat. no. 4183.0), show the Australian Government allocated funding of $34.8m to Literature and print media in 2009-10. State and territory governments contributed $14.0m.
