Purpose
information from this Survey will not only provide a picture of the social characteristics of Australia's population but will also provide information that will be used to better understand the links between different aspects of people's lives and how these affect the well-being.of Australians generally.

Description
The survey will be based on an expected sample of 15.050 responding households and will provide an overview of a variety of different topics by using summary tables for different population groups and selected themes. More detailed cross classified tables will also cover selected themes. It will provide a range of information not previously available from households surveys in smaller states.

Data are proposed to be collected by personal interview of households.

  • Education;
  • Employment;
  • Transport;
  • Disability status;
  • Sports participation;
  • Culture and leisure activities;
  • Family;
  • Household support;
  • Social Contact;
  • Information technology
  • Income;
  • Economic resources;
  • Financial security; and
  • Demographic and other characteristics.

In relation to transport, data items will include whether the respondent has access to a motor vehicle, how difficult the respondent sees their transport situation and travel time to work.

Geographic Coverage
Australia, with data for all states and territories available .

Frequency of Data Availability
The first release of data is due in April 2003. The survey is expected to be repeated in four years.
