SUMMARY OF OPERATIONS

At the end of June 2007, there were 2,236 not-for-profit organisations in Australia mainly engaged in providing a range of services not elsewhere classified. Examples of these types of organisations include cooperative schemes, manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and cemetery operators.

Collectively, these organisations employed 18,298 people at the end of June 2007. Over a half (56.1% or 10,270 people) were employed on a permanent full-time basis. Permanent part-time employees accounted for 26.3% (4,816 people) of total employment and casuals 17.6% (3,212 people).

In addition to paid employees, there were 193,217 volunteers during the 2006-07 financial year.

Industry value added by these organisations was $1.3b.

SOURCES OF INCOME

During the 2006-07 financial year, these not-for-profit organisations received $6.1b in income.

The graph below shows that the main source of income for these organisations was sales of goods, which accounted for 59.8% ($3.7b) of total income.

Income from services accounted for 14.9% ($0.9b) of total income and funding from federal, state and local government 10.9% ($0.7b).

EXPENSES

During the 2006-07 financial year, these not-for-profit organisations incurred $5.9b in expenses.

The graph below shows that the main expense incurred by these organisations was purchases, which accounted for 43.7% ($2.6b) of total expenses.

Labour costs accounted for 15.8% ($0.9b) of total expenses and grants and other payments made to other organisations/businesses and individuals 12.9% ($0.8b).
