Purpose
To provide data for the estimation of Gross Domestic Product (Income) in the National Accounts and produce aggregated profit information for use by policy makers and commentators.


Description
This survey collects information about profits and selected revenues and expenses of incorporated private sector businesses. The information from the survey is an indicator of the effectiveness of both broad monetary policy and specific industry initiatives. The survey is based on a stratified random sample of approximately 4,000 private business units selected from the ABS Register of Businesses.

Data are collected by mail questionnaire to private businesses every quarter.


Data Detail

  • Profits (before income tax);
  • Depreciation; and
  • Net interest paid.

    Data are available for the above items for the transport industries.


    Geographic Coverage
    Australia.


    Frequency of Data Availability
    Data are released quarterly.

    Historical Data
    The survey was first conducted in 1961. Data is available as a continuous series (via the ABS PC Ausstats service) from 1985.
