ABOUT THIS RELEASE

This publication is part of the Demography Working Paper series.

In Australia, population estimates for Statistical Local Areas are calculated annually. In years where a Census of Population and Housing is held, these estimates are derived with minimal adjustments from census data. These censusbased population estimates are updated for following years based on estimation techniques which relate population change to change in indicators of population.

There are numerous methods available to update censusbased populations. The Australian Bureau of Statistics currently relies on the regression estimation method to obtain a provisional estimate of the total population of each Statistical Local Area. Each population estimate is then validated individually using a range of indicator data, other techniques and utilising local knowledge.
