Educational attainment in Canberra

More than half of Canberra's residents had non-school qualifications, according to an analysis of 2006 Census figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

The proportion of Canberrans with non-school qualifications increased from 41% in 1996 to 52% in 2006.

Nearly a third (30%) of Canberra's residents had a Bachelor Degree or higher qualification, compared to 16% of Queanbeyan residents and 16% nationally.

However, only 13% of ACT residents held a Certificate I - IV qualification, compared to 18% of Queanbeyan residents and 17% nationally.

Other key findings from the report include:
  • The proportion of Canberrans attending schools, TAFEs or Universities dropped from 30% in 2001 to 27% in 2006.
  • Queanbeyan's attendance figures also fell but to a lesser extent (from 26% to 24%) - similar to the national fall (from 25% to 23%).
Further details can be found in the November 2007 issue of ACT Stats (cat. no. 1344.8.55.001).
