OVERVIEW
The Household Use of Information Technology (HUIT) survey was designed to provide a profile of the uptake and use of information technology in Australian households. The survey was conducted as part of the Population Survey Monitor (PSM). The PSM was conducted quarterly, collecting data on a number of topics from households throughout Australia.
PURPOSE
To provide statistics about the extent of computer and Internet access in Australian households. In addition a profile of adult users of information technology (IT) at home, work and other sites was also presented.
SCOPE
The scope of the LFS is restricted to people aged 15 years and over and excludes the following persons:
- members of the permanent defence forces
- certain diplomatic personnel of overseas governments, customarily excluded from census and estimated populations
- overseas residents in Australia
- members of non-Australian defence forces (and their dependants).
For the MPHS the following people are also excluded:
- people living in special dwellings such as hotels, university residences etc
- students at boarding schools, patients in hospitals, residents of homes (e.g. retirement homes, homes for persons with disabilities), and inmates of prisons
- visitors to private dwellings
- people living in very remote indigenous communities.

COLLECTION HISTORY
Quarterly HUIT surveys were conducted in February 1994 and all quarters (February, May, August and November) of 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000. The PSM was conducted for the last time for the November quarter 2000. From 2001, data will only be collected annually using one of a number of ABS surveys e.g. Survey of Education , Training and Information Technology (SETIT), General Social Survey (GSS) and/or Multi Purpose Household Survey (MPHS).
