    NAME OF ORGANISATION
    Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS)

    OVERVIEW
Poultry slaughterings statistics are compiled from returns supplied by commercial poultry establishments. Producers in the Northern Territory, the Australian Capital Territory and the many very small producers are excluded from the collection, however, the statistics represent a high level of coverage. Western Australia and Tasmanian data are collected, but are confidential and not released for publication.

The data are collected on a State basis and then aggregated to derive Australian totals. The Australian totals data excludes Tasmania.

    PURPOSE
Chicken slaughterings and meat produced are published in Livestock Products, Australia (ABS Cat No. 7215.0). Data are primarily used by the Australian Bureau of Agricultural Resource Economics, the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Australia and other research and industry organisations to monitor the meat production levels.

The data are also used as input to the calculation of the Value of Agricultural Commodities Produced, Australia and the Australian National Accounts.

    SCOPE
    Larger commercial poultry slaughtering establishments.
