OVERVIEW
The wool statistics published in the bulletin "Livestock Products, Australia" (ABS Cat No. 7215.0) are based on data collected in a mail based, quarterly census of wool brokers and dealers. Data collected includes information on wool sales, receivals, purchases, interstate movements and stocks.
PURPOSE
To provide wool sales, receivals, purchases, interstate movements and stocks data to the Australian Wool Corporation, the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE) and the Department of the Treasury, in order to monitor wool production and flow and to formulate industry policies.
The data are also used as input to the calculation of the Value of Agricultural Commodities Produced (VACP), Australia and the Australian National Accounts.

DATA DETAIL
Conceptual framework
This collection includes data from all brokers and dealers registered with the Australian Taxation Office. The data items collected include the quantity (number of bales) and weight of wool purchased or received; the quantity, weight and value of wool sold, excluding Goods and Services Tax (GST), and the quantity and weight of stocks, of all taxable wool.
Main outputs
Original, Seasonally Adjusted and Trend level estimates of the weight of taxable wool received by brokers and dealers, by calendar quarter, by State of receipt and Australia, and the Australia level % of total weight received by brokers.
State of origin data are provided to Value of Agricultural Commodities Produced (VACP) and National Accounts, and used as input into the compilation of estimates for the Australian Wool Production Forecasting Committee.

Prior to the September quarter of 1998 this collection was a monthly collection.
COLLECTION HISTORY
This collection was included in the first issue of Livestock Products, Australia (ABS Cat No. 7215.0) in March 1981. Prior to this it was published as a separate bulletin in Wool, Australia 1979-80 (ABS Cat No. 7212.0). The collection was significantly revised in 1994 to address data quality concerns. This resulted in a single form being used to collect both brokers and dealers data.
June 1998 - final monthly collection conducted. The collection is quarterly after this date.
