    OVERVIEW

Educational Attainment and Employment, Vic 1995 was conducted in Victoria during October 1995 as a supplement to the Monthly Population Survey. The target population was persons aged 15-54 years. Attributes collected include: age, sex, employment status, statistical region, educational attainment, number of post-school qualifications, study intentions, type of degree, reason for studying, reason for changing work, preferred occupation, whether working in preferred occupation, and main occupation.

    PURPOSE

Explore links between education and training and employment outcomes for persons aged 15-54 years.

    SCOPE

The survey collects information by personal interview from usual residents of private dwellings in Victoria aged 15 to 54. Private dwellings are houses, flats, home units, caravans, garages, tents and other structures that are used as places of residence at the time of interview. Long-stay caravan parks are also included. These are distinct from special dwellings which include hotels, boarding schools, boarding houses and institutions. Residents of special dwellings are excluded.

The survey also excludes households which contain members of non-Australian defence forces stationed in Australia and diplomatic personnel of overseas governments.

    DATA DETAIL

    Conceptual framework

The target population was residents of Victoria aged 15-54 years, which was then split into persons with post-school qualifications and those without. These two groups were then further classified by labour force status.

Persons with post-school qualifications are persons who have left school and answered 'yes' to the question 'Since leaving school, have you completed an educational qualification such as a trade certificate, other certificate, diploma or degree?'. Note that 'post-school qualifications' does not include secondary school certificates.

The labour force is defined to be conceptually equivalent to the pool of labour available for the production of economic goods and services as defined for System of National Accounts (SNA) measures of economic output. On the basis of a specific set of rules, the labour force framework classifies, at a given moment in time, the population aged 15 and over for measuring the economically active population, into three mutually exclusive and exhaustive categories: employed, unemployed and not in the labour force. The employed and unemployed categories together make up the labour force, or the currently active population, which gives a measure of the number of persons furnishing the supply of labour at a given moment in time. The third category (not in the labour force) represents the population not currently economically active.
