    OVERVIEW

    The survey has been conducted twice, in respect of 1993-94 and 1996-97. Its scope was all employing management units. Information is produced showing the level of sponsorship and number of sponsors broken down by field of sponsorship, and size and industry of sponsoring businesses. Comparisons are made between sponsoring and non-sponsoring businesses.

    PURPOSE

    The purpose of the survey is to gather information on sponsorship by businesses which could be used to:

    • determine the importance of sponsorship relative to donations, government assistance etc.; and
    • assess the effectiveness of government programs designed to encourage business sponsorship.

    The main objectives of the survey are to determine:

    • the level of sponsorship provided by businesses to the arts and to sport;
    • which industries were most likely to sponsor the arts and which were most likely to sponsor sport;
    • the level of support provided by small, medium and large businesses

    The main users of the information was the Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts (DOCITA) and the Recreation and Sport Industry Statistics Group (RSISG) which jointly funded the survey.

    SCOPE

    The source of the survey's coverage was the ABS Business Register. The survey covered all business units except:

    • Agricultural businesses;
    • Non-employing businesses in other industries;
    • Businesses classified to the General Government Sector.

    Businesses are classified by ANZSIC division and employment size (small, medium and large).
