OVERVIEW
The Music and Theatre Production industry survey is an ad hoc survey which aims to provides key measures on the performance and characteristics of Music and Theatre Production activity. The survey aims to identify the nature and structure of the industry in terms of employment, income, expenses, activity data and its contribution to the Australian economy.
The Music and Theatre production survey is the third ABS survey with previous surveys being conducted in respect of 1999-00 and 1996-97. The Music and Theatre production survey was surveyed previously as part of the Cultural Services Industries Surveys (Collection ID 465). This collection is a component of the Performing Arts Surveys, which is also a subset of the cultural services industries.
PURPOSE
The Music and Theatre Production industry survey aims to provides key measures on the performance and characteristics of Music and Theatre Production activity. The survey aims to identify the nature and structure of the industry in terms of employment, income, expenses, activity data and its contribution to the Australian economy. The collection is a survey of businesses and organisations mainly engaged in providing live theatrical or musical presentations including concerts, opera, ballet or drama.
SCOPE
The scope includes all employing units on the ABS Business Register, defined as units with an active or replaced ABN and a non cancelled ITW role, classified to ANZSIC class 9241 Music and Theatre Productions. This class comprises businesses and organisations mainly engaged in live theatrical or musical presentations, including popular music concerts, musical theatre, symphony, choral, opera and dance productions. These can involve the activities of groups or companies, orchestras, bands or individual artists undertaken respect of the 2002-2003 financial year. The scope includes SISCA 3000 General government and SISCA 5000 Non-profit institutions serving households.
COVERAGE
The frame used for the survey, like most ABS economic surveys, was taken from the ABS Business Register. Any employing business on the ABR with an ANZSIC code of 9241 were eligible for selection.

Main outputs
Outputs from the Music and Theatre Production Survey will appear in Performing Arts, Australia (ABS cat. no. 8697.0) The publication contains summary employment, income, expense and activity tables.
The tables in the publication will include:
- key figures
- source of income split by profit/not for profit
- items of expenditure split by profit/not for profit
- characteristics of employment
- selected statistics by employment size groupings
- selected performance ratios
- various activity data
- performances and attendances by type of music or theatre production
State level estimates are produced for:
- number of businesses
- employment
- wages and salaries
- total income.
Classifications
The industry classification used is the Australian and New Zealand Industrial Classification (ANZSIC).
The Australian Standard Classifications of Occupations has been used for Occupation data.
The Australian and New Zealand Standard Product Classification (ANZSPC) has been used to provide a basis for recompiling basic product statistics from their original classifications into a standard classification for analytical. All product components have been mapped to ANZSPC.
