2001 Census Dictionary

The 2001 Census Dictionary (ABS cat. no. 2901.0) is a comprehensive reference guide essential for all census data users, and was released on 24 April 2001.

The dictionary will contain:

    • definitions of the concepts and classifications to be used in the 2001 Census;
    • listing of the 2001 Census output variables;
    • listing of all standard classifications used in the 2001 Census;
    • category mnemonics (4 letter codes) which are used to describe census variables; and
    • details of any changes that have occurred since the 1996 Census.
Many entries in the dictionary are cross referenced enabling related information to be easily located.

Census data users anticipating the need for customised tables will benefit from using the dictionary to plan and specify their requirements. Feedback from users of previous editions has indicated that the Census Dictionary has proven to be a valuable resource in the understanding of census concepts, planning and specification process.
