REGIONAL RESEARCH IN AUSTRALIA - AN INFORMATION DEVELOPMENT PLAN

The Information Paper: Regional Research in Australia - the Statistical Dimension: an Information Development Plan for Rural and Regional Statistics 2006 (cat. no.1362.0) is expected to be released early next year. The paper is the culmination of two years work undertaken by the ABS to develop an information framework for research, encompassing geographical, economic, social and environmental issues.

The paper details a series of statistical development recommendations for expanding the future availability and relevance of rural and regional statistics in Australia. It also provides a detailed overview of the concepts and issues associated with this field of statistics, with a particular focus on the nature and extent of current statistical demand. Existing survey and administrative data sources are examined and specific gaps in available rural and regional information are highlighted. Recommendations will be implemented collaboratively by the ABS and other key producers of rural and regional data over the next 3 to 5 years.
