The aim of the Framework for Australian Tourism Statistics is to provide guidelines which will encourage consistency and compatibility in the collection and publication of tourism statistics in Australia. As such, it is intended to provide a 'common language' for all users and collectors of tourism statistics. The use of a 'common language' in all collections will increase the value of the available data by enabling compatibility and comparability of results from all tourism statistics collections.
The first edition of the Framework was produced by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) in June 1991. In that edition it was noted that development of the Framework would be an ongoing process. It was expected that the Framework would evolve in the light of experience in its use and the continuing development of tourism statistics 'standards'. This current edition reflects further development work completed both internationally and in Australia. Internationally, in 1993 the United Nations Statistical Commission ratified a set of tourism statistics standards for concepts and definitions developed by the World Tourism Organisation. In Australia, during 1996 and 1997 the Bureau of Tourism Research conducted a review of tourism statistics which involved consideration of standards for this country. This Framework incorporates the relevant decisions from both of those events.
