About this Release

In recent times users of ABS Labour Force Survey (LFS) data have raised concerns that the volatility of the monthly seasonally adjusted estimates appears to be increasing. The results from the survey at a given point in time represents the estimates of the labour force conditions for that month. As with any other survey, the LFS is subject to measurement errors including sample and non-sampling errors. This paper focuses on three types of non-sampling errors which may be the sources of increased volatility. They are survey period effects, supplementary survey effects and questionnaire redesign effects.
