INFORMATION MEDIA AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS (IMT) COMPARED TO INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT)

The Information Media and Telecommunications (IMT) Division is defined by the industry classification, ANZSIC 2006. The main purpose of the detailed IMT component collected as part of the 2013-14 Economic Activity Survey (EAS) was to provide updated product level estimates for use in the National Accounts and Input-Output tables published annually by the ABS.

The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector is not defined in ANZSIC. The IMT component of the EAS survey does not attempt to measure the ICT sector, although there may be some overlap. The below table displays the ANZSIC06 classes which were in scope of the last ICT survey, which ran in 2006-07: Information and Communication Technology, Australia, 2006-07 survey (cat. no. 8126.0) compared to the scope of the IMT component of the EAS 2013-14 collection.

In January 2015 the ABS announced a joint review of ICT statistics with the Department of Communications. The Discussion Paper: Submission Process for the Information and Communications Technology Statistics Review, 2014-15 (cat. no. 8179.0.55.001) outlined the key objectives for that review:
  • consider the definitions used for key terms such as ICT and ICT statistics;
  • identify priority information requirements;
  • identify data gaps, overlaps and limitations of existing data sources;
  • examine options for use of administrative data sets;
  • develop a proposal to effectively measure the contribution of the ICT sector to the Australian economy.

A subsequent Discussion Paper: Consultation on topics emerging from submissions to the Information and Communication Technology Statistics Review (cat. no. 8179.0.55.002) was released in May 2015.

It should be noted that the ICT Statistics review has not made any changes to the scope of the ICT sector as defined in the publication: Information and Communication Technology, Australia 2006-07 (cat. no. 8126.0), however a review of the scope may form part of the recommendations relating to measuring the impact of ICT on the economy.
