INSTITUTIONAL ENVIRONMENT

Population Ageing in NSW, 2008 (cat. no. 4106.1) is produced by staff from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, in partnership with the NSW Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care (DADHC). Staff producing the publication have experience in the compilation of compendium publications (using both ABS and non-ABS data).

The design of Population Ageing in NSW, 2008 was guided by the previous release of Older People New South Wales, 2004 (cat. no. 4108.1)and the recent release of Towards 2030: Planning for our changing population(produced by DADHC). The aim of this product is to provide a reference for discussion and decision-making by the government and the general community.

RELEVANCE

Population Ageing in NSW, 2008 was developed to take into account current and on-going areas of social concern, emerging policy issues and the availability of relevant, timely and sound statistics. This involved researching:

  • Towards 2030: Planning for our changing population report
  • NSW State Plan
  • ABS key publications such as Australian Social Trends (cat. no. 4102.0), Measure's of Australia's Progress (cat. no. 1370.0) and Australian Economic Indicators (cat. no. 1350.0)
  • Other related Ageing publications such as Older People, New South Wales, 2004 (cat. no. 4108.1)
  • Key government and non-government agency publications and websites (such as the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) and DADHC)


    TIMELINESS

    Population Ageing in NSW, 2008 has been released on an irregular basis. The first issue titled Older People in New South Wales: A Profile(cat. no. 4108.1) was published in 1995, followed by Older People, New South Wales (cat. no. 4108.1) in 2000 and 2004. DADHC and ABS partner to produce this publication and is usually undertaken after the second release of Census data.

    The statistics contained in this publication were the most recent available at the time of its preparation. In some cases, the ABS web site and the web sites of other organisations, can provide more recent and/ or detailed statistics.


    ACCURACY

    The quality of data presented in Population Ageing in NSW, 2008 will vary based on the source of information. For example Census and administrative data will be more reliable than survey estimates and State data more reliable than LGA data. Before any data was included in this publication it was assessed to ensure it was fit and appropriate for analysis.

    ABS survey data is, when applicable, accompanied by annotations indicating the relative accuracy of the statistics. Other information relating to the accuracy or fitness-for-purpose of data (for both ABS and non-ABS data) can be found in the table footnotes/cell annotations. More detailed information on each collection or source can be found on the agency website or within the original publication, which are linked in the datacubes.


    COHERENCE

    The content of Population Ageing in NSW, 2008 was reviewed against the previous release of Older People, New South Wales. The recent release of the Towards 2030: Planning for our changing population report also had an influence on updating Population Ageing in NSW, 2008. The major changes associated with this publication are:
  • changes in the chapter structure and names to align with Towards 2030: Planning for our changing population
  • the updating of data sources to most recent reference period where possible, including 2006 Census data
  • the use of more non-ABS data sources, such as AIHW, NSW Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) and Productivity Commission
  • the use of more data from specific ABS Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander publications
  • the addition of Local Government Area tables for key indicators such as estimated resident population and birthplace
  • more extensive use of some ABS data sets such as the General Social Survey and Survey of Disability, Ageing and Carers
  • the use of new ABS data sets such as; Personal Fraud, Adult Literacy and Life Skills, Survey of Education and Work, Household Expenditure, Household Use of Information Technology and Retirement and Retirement Intentions.

    Population Ageing in NSW, 2008 reflects on issues of importance to NSW, and no attempt has been made to compare NSW to other States and Territories within Australia. Considering NSW side by side with other States and Territories could be informative. However, this would confine the use of data sets that aren't available from other states/ territories. Content was also developed around relevant issues for NSW and aimed to inform the debate within NSW and not act as a comparison with other States and Territories.

The information is sourced from multiple ABS collections as well as surveys and administrative datasets collected by non-ABS agencies.
