ABS scores highly in 2019 APS Employee Census
An employer of choice
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is pleased to release our agency results from the 2019 APS Employee Census.
The Australian Public Sector (APS) Employee Census is administered to all APS employees between May and June each year. The Employee Census collects information on important workforce issues such as job satisfaction, engagement, wellbeing, innovation, leadership, performance management and risk management.
In 2019, 85% of ABS employees chose to share their views by participating in the Census. ABS 2019 results show improvement from 2018 in a number of areas and compare very favourably with agencies across the APS. Results demonstrate the ABS’ strengths in the perceptions of immediate supervisors, workplace culture, workplace conditions and innovation.
Since 2015, the ABS has been pursuing a comprehensive organisational transformation to improve our partnerships, strategy, governance, people, culture and infrastructure. It is pleasing that this work has resulted in improved employee perceptions in our 2019 Employee Census results.
ABS 2019 Employee Census results reflect our commitment to being an employer of choice. Results reinforce our focus on purpose, people, place and partnerships as motivators for our employees.
– informing Australia’s important decisions:
- 90% “believe strongly in the purpose and objectives of my agency” (APS average: 82%).
- 84% “feel committed to my agency’s goals” (APS average: 79%).
- 93% report they feel it’s their responsibility to continually look for new ways to improve (APS average: 86%).
– we are open, diverse, passionate and dedicated:
- 94% believe “people in my workgroup behave in an accepting manner towards people from diverse backgrounds" (APS average: 88%).
- 90% “believe my immediate supervisor cares about my health and wellbeing” (APS average: 82%).
- 90% believe “my supervisor encourages me to contribute ideas” (APS average: 84%).
– we build careers in a modern flexible workplace:
- 91% are “satisfied with their non-monetary employment conditions (e.g. leave, flexible work arrangements, other benefits)” (APS average: 77%).
- 84% believe “my job gives me opportunities to utilise my skills” (APS average: 81%).
- 74% “would recommend my agency as a good place to work” (APS average: 64%).

- 83% believe “the people in my workgroup complete work to a high standard” (APS average: 78%).

What do we do with our results?
The ABS uses the results from each year’s Employee Census to inform our people strategies and policies, and to track progress against workforce initiatives. We discuss results with employees to identify their highest priorities for action. We have a number of people-related initiatives underway to help us continuously improve.
