Number of Motor Vehicles (VEHD, VEHRD)This variable records the number of registered motor vehicles owned or used by household members, that were garaged or parked at or near the occupied private dwelling on Census Night. The question relating to Number of Motor Vehicles (MRED) was first asked for the 1966 Census, with the 'None' added in 2006. The categories have been revised for 2011. Further information on Census Topics 1911-2011, can be found in How Australia Takes a Census (cat. no. 2903.0). The non-response rate for this variable was 6.5% (7.8% in 2006). More information is available from the 2011 Census non-response quality statement. Data for this variable is captured automatically from written numeric responses, or the 'None' mark box. This process is subject to low levels of recognition error. Outlying values are checked manually to ensure that they match the actual response on the form. The data may include a small proportion of dwellings with unusually large numbers of bedrooms, as all numeric responses are accepted as reported. The data is also subject to normal sample checks to ensure an acceptable level of quality. Additional categories have been made available for 2011 to include single fields for values from 0 to 29. Values of 30 or more are grouped as a single range. Ranged data is also available from the variable Number of Motor Vehicles (ranges) (VEHD). More information on Number of Motor Vehicles (VEHD) is available in the 2011 Census Dictionary (cat. no. 2901.0).
