In seasonally adjusted terms:

• Total dwelling commencements fell 6.7% to 41,374 dwellings.
• New private sector house commencements fell 2.3% to 28,330 dwellings.
• New private sector other residential commencements fell 16.5% to 12,053 dwellings.
• The value of building work done fell 1.1% to $30.7b.

The April 2023 seasonally adjusted estimate: 

• Total dwellings approved fell 8.1%.
• Private sector houses fell 3.8%, while private sector dwellings excluding houses fell 16.5%.
• The value of new residential building fell 2.7%, while the value of non-residential buildings rose 13.5%.
• The value of total building rose 4.7%.

Provides final estimates of value of construction work done, in chain volume measures

In seasonally adjusted terms in the December quarter:

• Total construction work done fell 0.4% to $55,272.0m
• Building work done fell 1.6% to $30,578.6m
• Engineering work done rose 1.0% to $24,693.5m

The trend estimate for total construction work done rose 0.9% in December.

In the December quarter:

• Seasonally adjusted work done rose 2.0%.
• Seasonally adjusted work done for the private sector fell 0.2%.
• Value of work commenced fell 29.9% in original terms.
• Trend work done rose 2.8%

• Australia’s dwelling stock was 10,879,349 dwellings at 30 June 2022.

• The net quarterly growth was 38,535 dwellings (0.4%), comprising 45,522 dwelling additions and 6,987 dwelling removals.

• The net quarterly growth of houses, townhouses and apartments was 23,456 (0.3%), 6,713 (0.5%) and 8,361 (0.5%) respectively. 

• 80.6% of in-scope land parcels were zoned residential, with 600 - 800 square metres the most common size
• 59.5% of new dwellings in-scope were approved for land zoned residential, with 200 - 400 square metres the most common area per dwelling
