Unpaid carers abound in East Arnhem

For the Northern Territory, the largest percentage of people providing unpaid care, help or assistance to family members or others was in East Arnhem, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

This is just some of the regional data that can now be found through the new ABS data navigator, making it easy for local communities to view a wide range of different data for their area.

"The new Data by Region navigator provides an efficient and interactive way of accessing data", said Lisa Conolly from the ABS.

Data is available for hundreds of items including, population, births, average income levels, building approvals, number of aged pensioners, business counts, number of motor vehicles, land use, and much more.

For example, did you know that compared with the rest of the Northern Territory:
  • The highest proportion of people providing unpaid care, help or assistance to family members or others was in East Arnhem (27 per cent)
  • Households in MacDonnell had the highest mortgage payments - an average of $2,575 a month
  • Residents of Wagait were the oldest (median age of 49.7 years) while those of Victoria-Daly were the youngest (median age of 24.2 years)
  • Outside of Darwin, people in Coomalie had the highest proportion of most passenger motor vehicles (448 per 1,000 people)
  • The highest proportion of recipients of Newstart Allowance (for more than 365 days) lived in Central Desert (80.1 per cent), Belyuen (78.6 per cent) and Barkly (77.5 per cent)

Regional information is available over a five year period up to 2012, so local communities can track changes over time in the characteristics of their areas.
