Construction activity still strong in September quarter


The value of construction work done in Australia increased 6.6% to $16.6 billion in seasonally adjusted chain volume terms during the September quarter 2002, according to preliminary figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Construction Work Done, Australia, Preliminary shows the strength of the building sector continued, with activity up 6.5% to $11.1 billion or 22.8% more than a year earlier. Non-residential building jumped 11.4% to $3.7 billion, while residential building, up 4.3% to $7.4 billion, was at its highest level of activity other than the pre-GST June quarter 2000. For engineering construction, the 6.9% increase was to a record $5.5 billion. Compared with a year earlier, engineering work done for the private sector was up almost 50% to $2.7 billion.

For the first time, the latest issue of this publication includes preliminary estimates for the states and territories to assist economic commentators and other users to gain an early insight into key national account measures and state and territory trends.
