Utilities contribute to Australia

The Electricity, Gas and Water Supply industries are important components of Australia's economy, contributing 2% of gross domestic product in 1998-99 and 4% of Australia's total combined assets.

These and other figures are presented in a new ABS publication, Directory of Electricity, Gas and Water Supply Statistics, released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) today. The directory contains details of a wide variety of statistical sources covering the ABS and other organisations, from both the private and public sectors.

It also contains comprehensive information on different aspects of electricity, gas and water supply industries ranging from education and training, employment, environment and innovation to financial performance and production.

The information on each statistical source includes data produced, geographic coverage, frequency of data availability, details of publications and other products as well as contact details. For some collections a sample of the type of information available is given. Indexes are provided for quick reference to sources and subjects.

Organisations, industry associations and policy makers involved in these industries, and researchers, are expected to find this directory particularly useful.

The publication Directory of Electricity, Gas and Water Supply Statistics (cat. no. 1140.0) is available from ABS Bookshops and also on this site. If you wish to purchase a copy of this publication, contact the ABS Bookshop in your capital city.
