Families Data from Labour Force Survey Couple families There were 4,051,400 couple families in Australia in June this yearot which 1,982,500 (or 49 per cent) included dependant children, according to Labour Force Survey data released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Of these couple families with dependants, 58 per cent had both parents employed compared with 53 per cent in June 1994. Ninety-two per cent had at least one parent employed, while 8.3 per cent had one or both parents unemployed,compared with 9.9 per cent in June last year. Some 42 per cent of couple families without dependants had both spouses employed while 36 per cent had neither spouse in the labour force. One-parent families Of the 666,000 one-parent families in June, the parent was employed in 43 per cent of all one-parent families while 49 per cent of lone parents were not in the labour force. In June, 7.6 per cent of lone parents were unemployed. Some 85 per cent of one parent families are headed by a female parent. Dependants In June 1995 there were 4,740,300 dependants included in couple and one-parent families. Some 3,952,200 dependants (83 per cent of all dependants) lived in a family where at least one parent was employed while 8.4 per cent of all dependants lived in a family where one or more parents were unemployed Non-family members For persons who were not members of a family, 74 per cent of those not living alone were employed. In contrast, 42 per cent of persons living alone were employed (57 per cent of males and 31 per cent of females).
