Continued strong growth in cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services drives Retail Trade up 0.3% in August 2010


The latest ABS Retail Trade figures show that retail sales increased 0.3% in August, seasonally adjusted, compared with an increase of 0.7% the previous month.

Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services (1.5%) recorded the largest increase in August after a strong result in July followed by Other retailing (1.4%), Household goods retailing (0.5%) and Department stores (0.6%). Sales in Clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing (-1.5%) and Food retailing (-0.3%) recorded a fall in sales.

New South Wales (0.7%), Western Australia (1.1%) and Australian Capital Territory (0.7%) recorded the largest seasonally adjusted increases in August, followed by South Australia (0.1%) and Tasmania (0.2%). Sales in Victoria (-0.2%), Queensland (-0.1%) and Northern Territory (-0.5%) decreased in August.

Trend turnover increased 0.5% in August 2010. This follows a 0.5% increase in both July 2010 and June 2010. In the twelve months to August 2010 trend turnover increased 3.9%.
