ACT Government spends $55.5m on cultural funding

The ACT Government spent $55.5 million (m) funding cultural activities during 2004-05, according to new analysis of recent Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data.

Canberra's libraries and archives were the main winners receiving the majority (72% or $21.5m) of heritage funding.

Per person Canberra's libraries and archives received more than three times the national funding levels ($66.28 per Canberran compared with $19.56 per Australian). See media note.

Other heritage activities the ACT Government contributed funding for included $13.6m on nature parks and reserves, $3m for other museums and $1.8m on art museums.

Arts funding

In total the ACT Government contributed $15.7m for arts activities in 2004-05. Performing arts venues ($5m) and performing arts ($3.4m) received the bulk of these funds.

The level of arts funding per Canberran ($48.38) was significantly higher than the rest of Australia with the exception of the Northern Territory ($70.76).

Full details can be found in ACT Stats: Cultural funding by Government in the ACT (cat. no. 1344.8.55.001).
