Record grape production in 2001-02: ABS

The total production of grapes increased, by 11% to a record 1.7 million tonnes in 2001-02, according to figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) today.

This increase came despite unfavourably cool conditions being reported in some of the major southern grape growing regions.

The total area of vines also increased, by 8% to a record 160,000 hectares in 2001-02.

While the largest producing state, South Australia, recorded only a modest increase in production (up by 2% to 693,000 tonnes), Victoria and New South Wales recorded significant increases as they generally experienced better seasonal conditions. Victorian production was up by 12% to 493,000 tonnes and New South Wales production by 26% to 440,000 tonnes.

For the second year in a row red grape production (867,000 tonnes) surpassed white grape production (843,000 tonnes), reinforcing shifts in consumer preferences.

These preliminary estimates are in Vineyard Estimates, Australia, Preliminary, 2002 (cat. no.1329.0.55.001) - an electronic release is available on this web site.
