Quick and easy access to Indigenous mapping and information

You can now quickly and easily access, in the one product, Indigenous geography maps together with some of the 2001 Census information available about the areas being mapped. Today the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) released the Australian Indigenous Geographical Classification (AIGC) on CD-ROM, incorporating for the first time not only maps but also Census Indigenous Profiles for ATSIC Regions and Indigenous Areas.

The AIGC provides a geographic standard for the publication of statistics about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.

The AIGC CD-ROM includes reference maps of ATSIC Regions, Indigenous Areas and Indigenous Locations showing the boundaries and roads for these three levels of geography. The Indigenous Profiles from the 2001 Census, shows key characteristics of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population for each ATSIC Region and Indigenous Area. They are available free of charge from the ABS web site, but are also included on the CD-ROM to provide a quick and easy way for clients to relate the geography of these areas with the Census information about them. Census Indigenous Profiles at the more detailed Indigenous Location level are not included in the product, but can be purchased separately from the ABS web site.

Further details are in Australian Indigenous Geographical Classification Maps and Census Profiles 2001 (cat. no. 4706.0.30.001). The CD-ROM can be purchased at ABS Bookshops (in your capital city) or through the National Information and Referral Service on 1800 633 216.
