Taking count of Australian agriculture

Every five years the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) takes the pulse of Australia’s agriculture industry by conducting an Agricultural Census.

And it’s on again now!

Around 103,000 farming businesses have received letters about the 2016 Agricultural Census, and their completed forms are due on Thursday July 7.

“The Ag Census is one of Australia’s largest statistical collections and provides a rich data source for the agricultural industry,” said Jacky Hodges, the General Manager of the ABS’ Industry Statistics Division.

“We’re counting on the farming community to be active participants in the Ag Census, as the data will be critical to their industry’s future.

“Their participation is important to ensure an accurate picture is available on which to base significant decisions for Australian agriculture.”

After consultation with industry bodies and agricultural business, the ABS has made big improvements to this Ag Census including improving reporting options.

In 2016 a streamlined online form will enable quicker and easier completion of forms.

“By jumping online to complete the Ag Census the farming community will be able to take advantage of a faster, easier, secure and environmentally friendly way of providing their information to the ABS,” said Ms Hodges.

“This time around we are aiming for a 70 per cent take-up rate for the online reporting option.”

For those who need support to complete their Ag Census or have questions, please call us at the ABS on 1800 462 609.
