The latest ABS Retail Trade figures show that Australian retail turnover was relatively unchanged (0.0 per cent) in June 2013, seasonally adjusted, following a rise of 0.2 per cent in May 2013.

Turnover rose in cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services (0.9 per cent), household goods retailing (0.3 per cent) and food retailing (0.1 per cent). These rises were offset by falls in other retailing (-1.1 per cent) and clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing (-0.2 per cent). Department stores (0.0 per cent) was relatively unchanged. Over the longer term, food retailing remains the strongest contributor to growth (up 0.2 per cent in trend terms).

Turnover rose in Victoria (0.1 per cent), the Australian Capital Territory (1.3 per cent), South Australia (0.3 per cent) and Queensland (0.1 per cent). These rises were offset by falls in Western Australia (-0.4 per cent), the Northern Territory (-0.4 per cent) and Tasmania (-0.1 per cent). New South Wales (0.0 per cent) was relatively unchanged. Over the longer term, New South Wales remains the strongest contributor to growth (up 0.2 per cent in trend terms).

Through the year, Australian retail turnover rose 1.1 per cent in June 2013, seasonally adjusted, compared to June 2012.

The trend estimate for Australian retail turnover rose 0.1 per cent in June 2013. This follows a 0.1 per cent rise in May 2013. Through the year, the trend estimate rose 2.1 per cent in June 2013 compared to June 2012.

In volume terms, turnover was relatively unchanged (0.0 per cent) in the June quarter 2013, seasonally adjusted, following a rise of 2.0 per cent in the March quarter 2013.
