Darwin - the statistical gateway to Indonesia: ABS

Darwin will act as a regional meeting point when the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ (ABS) Northern Territory Office hosts a training course in national accounts for more than thirty delegates from the Indonesian Statistical Agency, Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) next week.

The delegates come from all provinces within Indonesia. ABS Regional Director for the NT, Robyn Elliott, said Darwin’s proximity to Indonesia made it the perfect venue for this meeting of statisticians.

“The ABS has an international reputation for producing high quality statistical services and we are happy to cooperate with our neighbours,” she said.

“This course is part of our commitment to assist Indonesia to produce high quality, relevant and timely statistical information. Improved statistics will provide a better basis for developing policies.

“Over the course of the week ABS experts will provide our Indonesian colleagues with training in the UN System of National Accounts 1993 (SNA93). The ABS produces one of the best series of national accounts in the world and our trainers are experts in their field,” Ms Elliott said.

The training will take place under a Memorandum of Understanding between the ABS and the BPS and is funded by AusAID.

Tony Blythe, AusAID Program Manager for Indonesia, said the ABS was invited to apply for funding under the Australia-Indonesia Government Sector Linkages Program (GLSP).

“This program aims to promote sustainable development in Indonesia and help strengthen existing relationships and activities,” he said.

“Clearly the ABS can provide the BPS with the knowledge and expertise to continue to improve their statistical services and AusAID is pleased to be able to assist.”
