WA meat production survey

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has just completed the first phase of a two phase survey on meat production in Western Australia.

The survey focuses on the composition of the Western Australian sheep flock and beef cattle herd, and farmers' breeding and slaughtering intentions for sheep and cattle and intended exports of live sheep.

Results indicate that Western Australian farmers expect the intended turnoff of sheep for slaughter during the period July to December 1998 to exceed 2.3 million head. The intended turnoff of cattle for the same period is 386,000.

Farmers' intentions show they believe that the live export trade for sheep in late 1998 will be similar to that for the same period in 1997.

The survey has been conducted in association with the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia. Results will be used by Government and Industry organisations to plan for the future development of the livestock industry in Western Australia.

The second phase of this survey will be despatched in October, with results available in mid January 1999.
